ARTHRITIS SUBCOMMITTEE

Mission and Vision

Arthritis and its related rheumatic conditions constitute a heterogenous group of diseases and diagnostic imaging is indispensable in the primary investigation as well as quantification of diseases extent and severity. Standard radiographs still play a crucial role in initial assessment and US, CT, and MRI significantly contribute to qualitative and quantitative assessment both in early stage as well as in assessment of disease response.

The Arthritis Subcommittee of the ESSR was founded in 2003 by Prof. Kainberger who established the founding principles and led a group of enthusiastic and highly motivated colleagues. The intention of our group is to further promote education and research in arthritis including the dissemination of diagnostic algorithms, standardisation of protocols as well as the dissemination of knowledge in image interpretation and the organization of multicenter studies to aid Musculoskeletal radiologists in Europe.
Annually, the Subcommittee organizes the “Arthritis Imaging” Session at the ESSR meetings.

INTERVENTIONS SUBCOMMITTEE

Mission and Vision

The Interventions Subcommittee of the ESSR was founded in 2014 during the annual meeting held in Riga. Since then, the vision and purpose of the subcommittee has been to promote education and foster innovation in the field of musculoskeletal interventional radiology.

Percutaneous image-guided interventions include a wide array of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques ranging from anesthetic blocks and injections to more advanced procedures such as soft tissue and bone biopsy, tumor ablation and bone augmentation. These interventional techniques require specific training and need particular safety measurements. Discussion of specific guidelines and precautions regarding the indications and contra-indications, possible complications and after care is important. The Interventions Subcommittee aims not only at evaluating the scientific evidence of such therapeutic interventions but also at promoting excellence in research as well as networking among its members.

Within the next years, the Interventions Subcommittee will take all necessary actions to maintain the solid basis of our subspecialty and create the space necessary for musculoskeletal interventions to further flourish. This involves effort to promote performance and standardization of musculoskeletal interventions through provision of standards of excellence in education and training.

OSTEOPOROSIS AND METABOLISM SUBCOMMITTEE

Mission and Vision

The subcommittee has the aim to encourage the interest and research in metabolic bone disease and the methods of quantitative and qualitative assessment of body composition in the radiological community.

As a group, we try to create awareness, present educational projects and encourage research and innovation focused on metabolic and bone disease. This involves working towards the standardization of practice, optimization of imaging resources and diagnostic algorithms.

We aim to promote collaboration amongst members and with other ESSR subcommittees to create a forum for discussion on challenges and applications of new techniques and imaging advances.
The work of the subcommittee would like to highlight the importance and increase visibility of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease amongst radiologists.

How to join the Subcommittee

According to the “Regulations of ESSR Committees & Subcommittees” any full ESSR member is welcome to join the Subcommittee. The Chairperson should be contacted via the ESSR office (office@essr.org) with a CV. New members are going to be introduced to the subcommittee members during the meetings at ECR and ESSR congress. Therefore an abbreviated professional CV, optional with a photo, should be send with the informal application.

PAEDIATRIC SUBCOMMITTEE

Mission and Vision

The paediatric musculoskeletal subcommittee was established as a panel for musculoskeletal radiologists with a particular interest and expertise in imaging of musculoskeletal disorders in children. Children are not merely “small adults” when it comes to the musculoskeletal system. The complexity of the developmental characteristics, the constant changing features and particularities of the children’s skeleton can pose a significant challenge for paediatric and musculoskeletal radiologists equally. The impact of misdiagnosis in children can be devastating and have important implications in adulthood. At the same time, exposure to radiation and contrast agents can involve short and long term risks that need to be carefully addressed and pondered.

The main aim of this subcommittee is to promote educational projects and encourage research and innovation focused on musculoskeletal imaging in children. This involves working towards the standardization of practice and optimization of imaging procedures and algorithms, with the purpose of achieving early and accurate diagnosis with minimization of risk for paediatric patients. The intention is to promote collaboration amongst members and with other ESSR subcommittees to standardize and improve practice and create a forum for discussion on appropriateness and indications of techniques and imaging advances. The work of the subcommittee would like to encourage excellence in paediatric musculoskeletal diagnosis, and also increase the visibility of diagnostic and interventional paediatric musculoskeletal radiology as a specific discipline.

Projects

General ongoing activities:

  • Active participation in ESR and ESSR forums (initiatives including webinars).
  • Active collaboration with other international societies such us ISS and Paediatric societies.
  • Organisation of dedicated courses / workshops and collaboration in ESSR outreach programme.
  • Platform to share and save in interesting and /or controversial cases to submit to the members. These cases could be the basis of a platform for e-learning.
  • Offer an up-to-date choice of articles and external resources selected and suggested by the members for young radiologists and residents who wish to improve their knowledge in paediatric MSK imaging.

Current projects:

  • Conduct a survey on the status of teaching of paediatric musculoskeletal imaging across Europe.
The intention is to survey the importance of paediatric musculoskeletal radiology in the general core curriculum of the undergraduate students (some essential but clear points on common diseases) and explore the possibility of or the demand to develop a tailored and targeted e-leaning platform for paediatric MSK radiology in the future for medical students and residents.
  • AI in paediatric MSK radiology: challenges and perspectives (state of the art), with the provision of involvement of experts (legal, bioethical, industry…) with the aim to explore medicolegal consequences.
  • Advances in MSK paediatric radiology – as scoping review work
  • Use of contrast agents in paediatric MSK imaging – as a consensus work involving other groups from ESSR, and exporting it as a collaboration with ESPR.

SPORTS SUBCOMMITTEE

Mission and Vision

Radiologists are playing a definite role in the clinical management of high ranking athletes as well as of people enrolled in various forms of sports. At least since the Olympic games of Atlanta in 1996, indications for diagnostic imaging have been shifted towards the on-site detection of trauma and overuse. With new technologies in sonography, MDCT and MRI the possibility to document subtle findings has been pushed forward enormously. This leads to the detection of slight stress reactions of the bones, typical patterns of tendinosis, muscle trauma, or early forms of bone marrow edema. Distinct sports-related signs can be described with new insights in pathophysiology. Along with the detection of early abnormalities a new field of research is opened for the prevention of tendon ruptures, osteoarthritis, and fractures of bone. Thus, imaging in sports is an important link between sports medicine and imaging sciences stimulating each other within interdisciplinary clinical management.

The subcommittee for Imaging in Sports was founded with the intention to promote the various aspects of specific indications, of standardised techniques of investigation, and of the better understanding of imaging findings.

TUMOUR SUBCOMMITTEE

Mission and Vision

Musculoskeletal (MSK) tumours are rare and comprise a multitude of diverse entities. Recognition and early, accurate diagnosis of bone and soft tissue sarcomas are crucial for satisfactory patient outcomes. Bone and soft tissue tumour imaging is a mainstay of the diagnostic MSK tumour work-up. Standardized algorithms should be followed for local staging, and, if needed, for whole-body assessment, as well as for therapy control and follow-up.

The ESSR subcommittee Tumours consists of a group of colleagues who have a particular interest and expertise in imaging of musculoskeletal tumours, of both bone and soft tissues. The group was founded in 2005, with Suzanne Anderson as the subcommittee chair (three-year term), and “Pater” Mark Davies, Hans Bloem, and Daniel Vanel, and a great group of enthusiastic colleagues with representatives from many European countries.
The intention of the group is to promote both educational and research issues in bone and soft tissue tumours. This includes the standardization of imaging algorithms, and better understanding of imaging findings, as well as multicentre studies.

The subcommittee organizes the refresher session “Tumour Imaging” at the ESSR annual meeting.

Technical Guidelines

We prepared technical guidelines for ultrasound examination of individual joints – including the shoulder, the elbow, the wrist, the hip, the knee and the ankle – with the aim to obtain a global standard for musculoskeletal ultrasound training among European musculoskeletal radiologists. Scroll down to the download area below. Musculoskeletal radiologists who perform ultrasound are expected to follow these guidelines with the recognition that variations from them will be required in some cases, depending on patient’s needs and available equipment. We believe these standards will improve education and practice among radiologists and appropriate use of ultrasound as a diagnostic modality of the musculoskeletal system. Such guidelines are not intended, however, to establish a legal standard of care.

The European Society of MusculoSkeletal Radiology is an educational, scientific Society concerned with advancement of the art and science of musculoskeletal radiology. To promote this mission, the ESSR has issued technical standards for ultrasound examination of joints, including the shoulder, the elbow, the wrist, the hip, the knee and the ankle.
These US guidelines were first published in 2010.

Clinical Indications

The next goal of this subcommittee is to issue ultrasound clinical guidelines in musculoskeletal radiology that would be representative of the viewpoint of the ESSR and, more generally speaking, of the whole community of musculoskeletal radiologists in Europe. We are now working on that. To obtain educational standards and reference values, these guidelines will be prepared comparing the results of ultrasound and MR imaging based on data from the imaging literature. In the absence of available data, statements would be obtained by consensus.

Research

The subcommittee supports a multi centric study together with the Research Committee. The goal of the study is to compare MRI and US in follow-up of STT as described in “Follow-up of recurrences of limb soft tissue sarcomas in patients with localized disease: performance of ultrasound
